St. Ignatius had a tough run at the 2013 State Tournament not only in the end results, but also in the weather. All three days were rained out and play was moved inside, which resulted in shortened scoring that could have affected a couple of players end results if they were to have played full sets and had time to make a come back. Karl Daniels, who was in the group of favorites for placing at State, unfortunately came back from a school sponsored event the nite before State Tournament with a fever, chills and dizziness. Despite that, he did battle on his first day and came out with two wins. But then he came up against 2nd place finisher Kalen Christiaens and just had no energy to fight against Kalen who was hitting very well throughout the whole tournament. In his last match of the tournament, Karl played Bigfork surprise Seth Roessman and was playing well. They were neck and neck in the game score up until the 5-5 mark when Seth broke Karl’s serve and went up 6-5. Karl got a bit nervous at that point and lost the next two games. After calming down and focusing on point by point, Karl won the next two games and was at 7-8. At that point, even though Karl was doing the right things in his plan to defeat Seth, the shots just weren’t working out and too many landing in the net. That was just enough for Seth to pull out the win at 10-7. Seth went on to win his next two matches also and place third in the tournament. Karl  had a good tournament considering not hitting a tennis ball for three days before the tournament and then coming up sick. With time on the court this summer and hopefully getting started on next years season before the season starts, Karl should be able to make a mark at next years tournament as a Senior player.

A first year player for St. Ignatius that had also had a tough draw in playing Cutbank favorite Isaac Matt as his first opponent was Jamie Mullins. Jamie went out knowing that it was going to be hard, and yet he still got some winners off of Isaac. Jamie is a competitive player and hopefully took away from his loss what a top, seasoned player looks like and that he should set that goal for himself with hard work. Jamie went out and played a great match against another seasoned, Senior player in Andrew Haggerty from Troy. Jamie was up three games on Haggerty in the beginning when Haggerty started gaining a bit of an upper hand in his lobbing whenever Jamie went to the net. But, Jamie kept on fighting and still got lots of winner with his aggressive play. Came down to just having more experience and having been in that spot at State before when Haggerty pulled out a 10-8 win. Once again, Jamie can take away from that match that he almost pulled off an upset against a Senior player in Jamies first year of play.

With a bit of déjà-vu, Senior Katz Yelsa lost out in the doubles competition the match that would have earned him and his partner Nick Johnson a placement at State if they had won it. Same thing happened to Katz in 2012 with his partner Harry Suta. But, Katz really stepped up as a leader on the court this season at State. He was playing with first time player, Nick Johnson who was a senior that decided he would give tennis a try a couple of weeks into the season. Katz and Nick gelled well together with each other on the court, so Coach Ashley decided to have them give it a try. Katz really helped support Nick when he got frustrated and talked to him, told him how to improve on what they were doing. And Katz also hustled to make sure that every shot he could do something with, he did. Katz came away from State play with two wins and two losses.

The MS Tennis team has their next matches in Saint Ignatius on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. against Ronan
St. Ignatius H.S. tennis teams are coming into their final weeks of the season with Divisional and State tournament right around the corner. The boys team is being lead by Jr. Karl Daniels who is 9 win and 2 loss on the season. Karl is playing well and is looking forward to the Loyola Tournament that will feature many other state level players this weekend. It will be a good measuring stick as to what he needs to concentrate on for being even stronger come State Tournament. So much depends on the draw that a player is given, so he has to be ready for playing his top game each and every match. Troy Bontrager is also having a good year and could do well at State depending on his draw. He has silently been winning his matches and hitting some more offensive shots than he has in previous years. As a senior, it would be great to see him get a good draw and go deep into the tournament.

Remaining playing schedule for the Mission Bulldogs on the season is:
Tuesday, April 20 – AWAY vs. Bigfork at 4:00
Sat, May 4 – AWAY @ Missoula, play 9:00 a.m. – Girls at Best of the West, Boys at Loyola Tournament
Fri – Sat, May 10-11 – AWAY @ Eureka – Girls Divisional Tournament
Sat, May 11 – HOME – Boys Best of the West starting at 8:30 a.m.

Tie in Eureka

This past weekend the Lady Bulldogs Tennis team traveled to Eureka and got to play in nice warm weather. We walked away with a tie (3 games lost, 3 games won) but on the books it was a 3-2 win for us since the #1 doubles was both Eureka and Mission's #1 and #2 singles playing against each other.

The Lady Dogs have their first home meet against our Ronan rivals this week on Thurday, March 28! Play will begin at 4:00 p.m. Then, on Friday, March 29 we will travel to Missoula to play Valley Christian at the Fort Missoula tennis courts.  We will be leaving at 2:30 p.m. and play begins at 4:00 p.m.

We are looking forward to a good season with lots of growth from both our beginner and intermediate players! See you on the courts :)

Sat, 03/30 - Weds, 04/03: No practice or meets. Call a coach or some friends to hit around. Get your parents out there with you. ;)

A few guidelines to being a good tennis fan while watching a tennis meet:

*No coaching a player from the fans while they are playing. You can say "good job" or "nice point", but don't instruct them or tell them what to do.
*Don't be calling the lines for a player. That is their job and they know the guidelines of how to call in or out. Do not groan as a spectator if you disagree with someones call.
*Do not clap against an opponent's mistake or bad shot. It is okay to clap for a player if they have made a good shot and it caused their opponent to error, resulting in a Mission player to get the point. Do not clap if the opponent just made a mistake on their own.
*Clap and applaud good points by both a Mission player and an opponent. A good point is a good point, no matter who comes out with the win. Appreciate a good point.
*Please do not hang on the fence during play. This is a hindrance/distraction to all players involved.
*At no time are fans to correct a mistaken score or tell a player what they think the score is. The players have been taught how to keep track of the score, agree on the score and how to resolve it if both players think it is something else.

St. Ignatius H.S. Tennis season started on March 11th with a beautiful first week of weather. Last nite, got pushed indoors by a snowstorm. That is tennis in Montana for you. This year we currently have 15 boys and 8 girls participating. Only 5 seniors out of the bunch with enthusiastic first year players. Very exciting!

Parent packets were mailed out today with a parent letter and some guidelines to follow as a tennis fan of the Mission Bulldogs Tennis Team. Also mailed out the tennis practice and playing schedule, so hopefully you will be able to come watch the players during their tennis meets.
